Getting around

The problem statement is simple enough: people need to get from here to there to go about their daily life:

Sometimes they also need to carry a load:

As the distance gets larger, or the amount of time available gets smaller, or both, alternatives become necessary:

One makes do, even if demand sometimes outstrips supply:

Still, there will come a point where something even more expeditious is desirable, when one starts looking longingly at the next step up:

And lo! The next step up is good, even if one has to share, or if preternatural balance is required:

There is always room for improvement. Protection from the strong tropical sun, for instance:

Still, the convenience is appreciated by one and all, aka man and his best friend. (By the way, it was probably in the mid 90’s °F low 30’s °C when I took this picture. Note the insulated jacket.)

For those who eschew independent transport and for tourists, communal options are available…

…the vast majority of which seem to have been blessed by Che himself

So… as with many places in the developing world, I wonder what will happen when they all attain the living standards of the developed countries? Will all these scooter riders be driving Toyota SUVs? Will we end up with something like this?

Perhaps we will all be staring longingly at the past, whether or not it was actually simpler times?
