Children

“Bring your children to work day” is nothing new. Women the world over have been doing it since the dawn of time. This child was next to a loom at the Houey Hong Vocational Training Center for Women outside Vientianne:

And this one was outside a handicrafts shop in Ban Xieng Leck, a village near Luang Prabang, known for its artisanal mulberry paper products and handwoven silks:

There is a large number of young monks walking around Luang Prabang. Here is a particularly serious looking one at late afternoon on Kingkitsarath Rd:

Schoolchildren everywhere like to hang out. These are outside the Lycée de Vientiane at 5PM. Those who are prone to holding forth may have held forth.

In the background of the Lycée is the Patuxay. A plaque there describes it like this:

“At the northeastern end of the LaneXang Ave. arises a huge structure resembling the Arc de Triomphe. It is the Patuxay or Victory Gate of Vientiane, built in 1962 (B.E 2505), but never complete due to the country’s turbulent history. From a closer distance, it appears even less impressive, like a monster of concrete. Nowadays this place is used as leisure ground for the people of Vientiane and the seventh floor on top of the building serves as excellent view point over the city.”

The Laotian part of the plaque must have said something a bit more attractive, because the arch is a major photo op for the locals:

Meanwhile, back in the provinces, less fortunate children present their own photo ops as a way to help the family souvenir stand:
